A commercial creation and not a government innovation, Tang was made famous because it was consumed by a government employee, John Glenn. The fruit-flavored, sweetened powder was added by Gemini astronauts to water consumed during space flights. The water, produced as a byproduct of the operation of the spacecraft's life support systems, had a peculiar taste that Tang adeptly covered up. After it was known that John Glenn drank Tang on space flights, sales of the previously languishing product skyrocketed. This catapulting of an obscure product to instant fame led to the misconception that NASA invented Tang.
