U.S. Federal Innovation 18: Mapping the Yeast Mitotic Spindle


Spindle Microtubules

Recent advancements in microscopy have revolutionized the field of cellular and molecular biology and our understanding of the mechanisms behind mitosis. In the "Mapping the Yeast Mitotic Spindle" e-laboratory being developed by Science Approach and the New Media Research Institute with Small Business Innovative Technology Transfer Research (STTR) funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, students examine a series of tomograph volumes and see the role microtubules play during mitosis by aligning and separating replicated chromosomes and organelles. Using images captured by an electron microscope and digitally compiled into a three-dimensional volume (called a tomogram), students review the process of mitosis and study the role spindle microtubules play as they align and separate the cell's genetic material.
